Elizabeth Gaskell: 1851 portrait by George Richmond
Elizabeth Gaskell will be our special featured person from the past – This is the year to celebrate the many strong women of the north of England. She was a friend of Charlotte Bronte and her books, particularly ‘Mary Barton’ threw a spotlight on the inequality of the life of women working in the cotton mills.
Readings by Alison Padley-Woods (short-listed author for The Times Chicken House prize) AND by children whose winning writing is published in the 2018 edition of ‘Time Travellers and the Crystal Dome - Stories from the Portico’.
There will be tea and cakes, fun and games and Victorian clothes to dress up in.
If you are brave enough to come dressed as a Victorian you could win a prize!
